5 out of 5 stars Fastest Notebook HD, great performance Good alternative to WD Black 320 drives   January 18, 2010

I love these hitachi's! This is the 7K500 series model of hitachi travelstar hard disks. Having bought 2, one for my late 2009 mac mini (originally comming with a 5400 rpm fujitsu) and another for my 2009 MAcbook pro. These hard drives have amazing performance with only a small hit to the battery life on the macbook pro. Both systems are about 20-40% more responsive. I am by no means a Hitachi fan, but after doing my research, the seagate 7200.4 notebook hard disks, like their full desktop 3.5 in versions continue to have dependabilty issues. I have had 6 hitachis from various notebook and desktop systems in the last 10 years, and not a single one has failed on me. I strapped one of the 2 hard drives to a PC and using HD Tune, found these drives to have an awesome burst rate of 104MB/s with high 70-80 MB/ read speeds. Not to mention, the latest hitachi version is a powerconserver, on my Macbook's 7hr battery, I lost about 20-30 min of power cause its a 7200rpm drive. That is still plenty to work with at school and work! Considering the performance boost, I'll take it For only 69 beans, this HD is a steal for its performance. One thing I love about hitachis is that they run so super cool, MY mac mini has been running nonstop for the last week as a media and network server and I never hear the CPU fan rev nor a peep from the HD! Again, I am more of a WD fan, but hitachis are growing on me and this is a great alternative. Too bad they dont make a 500GB WD black NB. IF u are hardcore about your battery power, I suggest a WD blue 500GB or 640GB, for the same price, they save all kinds of power, you get all kinds of space, and pretty good perfomance and reliability.

5 out of 5 stars Fast drive without letting everyone know it   March 3, 2010

I initially purchased WD 320gb 7200rpm BEKT for my unibody macbook. The vibration was horrendous. I could feel the drive through the palm rest constantly and when the laptop was placed on a desk, I could feel the vibration on the other side, making entire desk hum... drove me crazy. There aren't that many complaints of noise on the WD drive which leads me to believe that the unibody construction of my macbook may be amplifying the vibration. One of the reviews that did mention the vibration, the reviewer recommended this Hitachi Travelstar drive. I promptly returned the WD and ordered the Travelstar. The vibration is completely gone. The operation is as silent, if not more so, than the stock drive that came with my mac and I am very happy with this drive. The drive imo has no discernable performance difference from the WD. Also the spinner on this drive is better covered than the WD, which may not mount to much, but adds to the peace of mind that i bought a quality drive.

5 out of 5 stars Picked up for a Playstation 3 Upgrade.   June 1, 2010

I wanted to get out of my 80Gb 5400RPM drive I had installed in my Playstation 3.
After it was installed and formated to run in my Playstation 3 I tested the speed of this drive by clean installing
metal gear solid 4 and it shortened my install time by over half.

Recommended install for anyone looking for a upgrade for a playstation 3.

5 out of 5 stars crazy fast   February 7, 2010

Just bought one of these to boost my laptops battery life and speed. It replaced a WD 160 scorpio, and after the Laptop analyzed the new lower draw from the drive after install, estimated I would see an additional 37 minutes of battery time. It does 82MB/sec and sits at 33 degrees celsius after 5 intense hours of use at ambient 22 celsius. Silent too. Loves windows 7.0. I can't think of anything else to say...Good job Hitachi.

5 out of 5 stars A solid, quiet & fast drive   February 15, 2010

I used this drive to convert my Vista (sucks) laptop to a Linux Mint (Wow!!!) machine. The drive is quiet and fast and survived shipping via USPS. I'm very happy with it.
