5 out of 5 stars Easy to use, sounds great   June 16, 2010

This easy-to-use, clip-on speaker for your laptop/notebook isn't going to replace your home stereo system, but it's not meant to. What it IS meant to do is upgrade your laptop's sound from tinny and distant to relatively full and clear.

And for that, it works like a charm.

Whether listening to music while I write, watching YouTube videos in the backyard with my wife, or enhancing my video gaming experience, I was impressed with the sounds coming out of my laptop.

Setup is easy. Set it on top of your laptop monitor (I often don't even bother to clip it), plug into a USB port, and boom, you're done. It's that simple.

The $40 might be a little steep depending on your needs -- if you don't need to travel, you can get a decent set of desktop speakers for the same price -- but if you haul your laptop/notebook around and want better audio when you do, you may be pleased with the results.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Plug-N-Play with Windows 7   May 28, 2010

I run Windows 7 on an ASUS Gaming Notebook and had -zero- problems installing this device. In fact, loading the device driver took longer than installing the soundbar! Total time from opening the package to playing music was less than 3 minutes. Sound quality, levels, etc are all easily adjustable from the control panel. The instructions included were minimal, but frankly, I didn't need them ... I think anyone familiar with adjusting the sound settings on their computer could install and use this with no problem.

As for sound quality - while not capable of producing the base and surround sound quality of a Bose system, this little soundbar vastly improved the sound quality from my notebook. Playing MP3's before had a 1970's AM-like quality - with the soundbar installed , it sounds like the band is playing in the room. I'm very pleased, and have pre-ordered two more for the other notebook computers here - so I would definitely give this two thumbs up and Recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Impressive, compact, and sleek-looking!   May 26, 2010

I was incredibly impressed with how easy this soundbar was to use and how it worked. Everything about the soundbar was incredibly easy to use. In fact, I dare say that if someone actually needs to use the instructions, I'd be shocked and appalled.

The bar has a knob at the back which will tighten it to the top of a laptop (it fit my Gateway LT2030u without any issue whatsoever). Also, it got tight enough that I can even turn my laptop upside down without having to worry about the speaker coming loose--nor was the soundbar so heavy that it unbalanced my tiny laptop. It runs through just a USB port, so after attaching it to the top of the laptop all one has to do is plug it in and listen.

The sound is much better than I expected. My laptop's standard speakers are pretty poor (as in very, very quiet and low quality), so the soundbar was an amazing upgrade. It allowed the laptop to get pretty loud (my husband joked that it sounded like I was getting ready to hold a party since I was playing dance-y music) without losing quality (Although I should mention that I couldn't test how it does with bass, as my laptop isn't equipped to let me play with that sort of setting, unfortunately). All around, I was pleased with the performance.

However, the thing I liked best about the soundbar is the portability and design. For storage, the bar's USB cord wraps neatly into a small channel that loops around the bar itself and ends with a spot that holds the USB port end itself, so that the cord is never in the way. Then one can pop that into a nice little storage bag that's included.

Like another reviewer noted, the only negative I can see with this soundbar is that it's not very convenient to leave on the laptop (the tabs are about 2mm or so thick, which makes closing the laptop awkward).

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly satisfied   May 28, 2010

One side-effect of technology is that it encourages laziness. I have a Compact Disc collection, but it's been a long time since I bothered to insert one of those silver little discs into my CD player. It's easier to just listen to music on either my MP3 player or my computer. The drawback to the latter is the sound. Even with the volume turned to its highest level, I often have to strain the hear the music.

I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I am completely satisfied with the Philips SPA5210B/27 Notebook SoundBar. Is the sound spectacular? Well, no, probably not, but it's extremely good and turns your laptop computer into a more than decent stereo system. I'm not big on reading the instruction manuals packaged with such products, and I didn't read this one, but it wasn't necessary. I couldn't manage to attach the soundbar to my laptop screen (those directions probably explain how to do it), but no matter. I just placed it off to the side. Connecting it is simple for anyone who has ever used a flash drive or placed the photos taken from a digitial camera onto their computer. Just plug the USB gizmo into the back and you're in business.

Like I said, I'm not an audiophile who insists on a sonic perfection that requires not only the best equipment, but also a room with the kind of acoustics, etc, that will permit that equipment to operate at maximum quality. But I think only serious audiophiles are likely to complain about the quality of the sound that this Notebook SoundBar delivers. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product   June 24, 2010

I love this thing...I dont know how I have l lived without one. My husband likes to watch/stream online movies on the pc in bed and he loves this since the volume on my laptop is not very loud. Same goes for hooking it up on the tv's and no sound comes from one of the TV's when you hook it up to the my pc to view the picture so this has been great for that as well. I highly recommend this item ;o)
